Yes its still on there, although I have not written any new ones for quite a while.

When i go back to see family i love the lanc culture and language. As i was surrounded by it as a lad my grandad and grandma uncles and aunties were all broad speakers. When my wife and daughter came over i had to translate very funny it was.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR COMMENT?

Dear Mr unworth?
In stand church white field in 1945 April. My grandfathers golden wedding, during which he recited a monologue called. OWD. TOWNLEY,S. DREAM. I don,t know if you have heard of it at all but would dearly love to have the full piece. I only know some of the verses, here they are
Neet were dismal wet and cold
Ast ever on it think
I were like a mothered gapin fool
For takin too much drink,
I staggered here
I staggered there
For I could hardly stand
Neet were dark as dark could be
I couldna see mi hand
From here on I can only remember bits so here goes
A donkey put is yed per fence
And gave a dismal Breyer.

The only other fragment was. Something to do with a dis embodied voice
Is that thee ther townly

So I am afraid that is all I can remember. My grandfather was from unworth and then white field. And I. Wish I could remember the rest. I have tried various. Lancashire dialect web sites but so far no luck .
Would be very grateful if by a million to one chance you know of it

A: Thank you for putting up your site. My mother was a Lancashire lass who immigrated to America in 1919. Three members of her family, born in Queen street, Wigan, settled within a few miles of each other and into a community with a number of other Lancashire families. When I moved to Wales for a couple years of work, I took my family of four youngsters and my wife to visit Wigan and Blackpool because I had so many memories passed down from my mother. As I stood in the market place, I was struck by the sounds of the dialect surrounding me. It carried my mind back many years to my childhood spent in the warm embrace of my Lancashire community in Illinois. It was a wonderful treat. Your website is a similar treat and I particularly appreciate the fact that you read many of the poems on the site. Thanks you very much.

A: My daughter who is now almost 40 read a poem in a show when she was 8 , we haven't been able to find it . We believe it was called nellie gowd flags tho while trying to find it we have seen reference to maggie gowd flags . She now runs a dance school and they are doing a large performance project for the war centenary this year . We wondered if you knew any suitable Lancashire poems for the school to perform . Also if you know the poem we are searching for for nostalgic reasons . Many thanks whether you can or you can't . These are some lines from the poem remembered from memory 30 yrs ago and so may not be 100percent correct
They called her Nellie gowd flags , cos oo wouldn't let her play - oo seemed to get we pleasure in shooin't kids away - er doorstep ya could eyt off for oo scrubbed it Evera morn, an if you dare'd to cross it, youd wish you'd ne'r bin born
Hope you can help , the children have put a tremendous amount of effort in , everyone of them researching their relatives who were in the war and performing a dance group in uniform costumes .
Many thanks , Anne Edgar

Hello Anne.

Thank you for your comment re: Nellie Gowd Flags.
I am sorry I don't know this poem.
There was a Lancashire Dialect poet by the name of Nellie Critchlow but I don't know where you would find her book.
Maybe you could try your local library and ask if they could do a search.

If you are looking for War poetry in Lancashire Dialect, I don't know where you would find any.
However if you are looking for poetry that relates to the war, there is a website that I built for a Wigan woman who wrote poems about this subject.
Although this lady is now dead, I kept her website running in her memory.
The website is WW2 Poems and can be found at: http://www.freewebs.com/ww2poems/

Or you can typ into Google ( Kathleen Lowe Oliver Poems )

Sorry I can't help more.

Best regards.

Answer from Webmaster

I'm sorry Ian but I do not know where the word 'Jackbit' came from.
It does refer to a miners lunch. As does 'Snap' which is derived from the sound of a lunch box ( Tommy Tin) lid being snapped shut.
A Jackbit is the bit on the end of a mining drill.
I presume the word came into use through a mining term.

Quick check on the meaning...did not find the real one! Essential meaning of "Bant" is "Strength". I remember it well! And most of us Lanky folks have it, physically and psychologically! Thought you might be interested! Shall check back onto this site on a regular basis! Meanwhile "Dark and True and Tender is the North; and Bright and Fierce and Fickle is the South"! God Love us Lanky-folk (and let Him give a thought to the White Rose also)!

Q: WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
A: Tyldesley, wigan

Q: HOW DID YOU FIND THIS WEBSITE?
A: Search engine

Q: DO YOU HAVE A WEBSITE?

Q: WHAT IS YOUR COMMENT?
A: Meaning of "bant" - I grew up using this word as a regular turn of phrase. It has a very specific meaning and doesn't just mean "quality" but the ability of a fabric to hold its original shape. It has no equivalent in Mainstream English which is why it survived into the 1970s at least. You used it to describe how a man's suit for example would lose shape with use and look old - that's loss of "bant"!

Response from Jeff ( Webmaster )
As you say Moira, “Bant” means ( String ) or ( strength of springness of material)

Also “ Bant” is a medical verb meaning ( to lose weight by practicing Bantingism )

The word “Bant” in Welsh means ( off )

In the South east of Ireland . “Bant” means ( Something that is highly enjoyable )
( “ Jaysus, that session was great bant” )

Around the Wigan area the word Bant is a dialect word used in phrases such as: “Tharr engines gett’n no bant in it”

( That engine has got no power in it.)

Purr a bit er bant in it. ( Put some effort into it )

“Banter” is Playful, witty chat.

( We had a reight good bit er banter at wark today)

I enjoyed the site. I wanted to look for old words my Granny used to use, including, "bant" and "powfagged". I never hear them today and I found myself using one before and decided to try to find the origin.

ANSWER BY WEBMASTER:

"Bant" - Effort - " Put a bit er bant in it" " Put a bit of effort into it "

"Banter" - "He were gee'in me aw this banter" or " He's gett'n a bit o banter "
" He was giving me all of this information " or " He can talk a lot "

"Powfagged" - tired or done in.

Saying: " Powfagged un Jiggered " I am very, very tired.

A: Hindley Green

Q: WHAT IS YOUR COMMENT?

In answer to Marilyn Mercer's comment.
Running along side of Manchester Rd, Tyldesley. was the Colliery " Clewarth Hall".
Down towards the Railway line that ran from Manchester where the terraced streets
known as "the Jig Brow"
From the railway line, the land sloped down towards Astley, this was known as " The Banks". "The Banks" later got changed to " The Bongs" and so Tyldesley became known as " Bongs".

"Jig" is colliery machinery that transported coal down to the waiting train carriages on the lines.
Hence the name "Jig Brow".

'In Dickies Meadow' northern saying after Richard 3 was killed on Bosworth field in a book I am reading just now.
I was raised on Laycocks poems--Bishop Fraiser and Thowd Collier, Bowtons Yard, Thowd Bellmon and lots more.
I have been told by people in various countries where I have lived and worked that the Wigan accent that I carry (Without shame or pride) is, suprisingly charming, various people have told me this.

Excellent site. There is a shortage of good Lancashire dialect sites. What I find strange is how many similarities there are with Yorkshire. I would have expected that Wigan was too far away from the border to be similar.

i'm from Bryn in Asthon in makerfield, as i like to say i'm a brynner born n breader! i speak quite broad wiganese ...(as it is more modernly called round ere!) i inherit it from my my late nan. she was very broad and alot of the in laws couldnt understand her!
i have been often told to 'speak proper' by past employees, i found this rather offensive as i am proud of my home town and my dialect!

Jeff, I'm also born 1946 in Leigh and am researching my family, the Pearsons who were mostly miners in Tyldesley from about 1883. I can tell you that the Ox Roast photo on your site is from 1925 and my grandfather is visible in it. I'm interested in the Jig brow as my ancestors lived there in Bank Street in 1891 and 1901. Is there any way I could get a decent copy of a couple of your jig photos? I'd be hugely grateful and I'm more than happy to pay.

I found your site while looking for mining villages in Lancashire of the early 1800s. I am a genealogy buff-our Wilsons were miners there. I am from the wrong side of 'the pond', but can read the dialect very easily! It carried over a few generations, and my grandmother still used some of the 'slang'!

I sure do. Jeffrey I think you are my 1st cousin !! I was born at 55 Tram St Platt Bridge on 13th July 1939.
My dad was Tommy Seddon born 16/2/15 at 53 Tram road and married Wynne in Aug.1938. My dad became a soldier early 1939 after working in the pits with his uncles...one of whom would have been your dad? Dads mum was Annie Gardner. Also remember an Uncle Ralph, Aunty Cissy, cousin Julie. Is Julie your sister?

Please reply and do you have a private email I can write to you? Am really looking forward to hearing from you.

A very heartening site to visit! Good stuff!
Having written a few dialect poems myself in the East Midlands Dialect, (The dialect DH Lawrence wrote in.) I wondered if there were any more contemporary writers of dialect poetry. Having found out there are a few online, and perhaps more who aren't I made the website above to encourage others to submit poems from their region to make a bigger collection reflecting the diversity of dialects around the country, and to encourage the use of dialect. Ah pairsonly ope none on em goo airt o' yose, an' kaip it up yoeth!

Since you ask. My grandparents were from Leigh moving to America in 1914. I still have second cousins living in Leigh. They have come to visit me and I them. My sister and I are making a trip in May. I have my airplane ticket in hand. One cousin has been trying to teach me the Lancashire Dialect via email without much luck. I am looking forward to having lessons when I visit. When I visited in 2000 he spoke Lancashire Dialect to me and I could understand none of it. My great grandparents are buried in Leigh Cemetery. I love Leigh, Wigan and the entire country. We are flying into Manchester to be met by the cousins and during our 9 day visit will take a train to London, visit Wales and Blackpool and of course visit with the family. Too soon it will be over and we will be back home. My Grandparents were married in St. Marys Church. I have enjoyed your website and recognized many of the places from my first visit. Thanks for making the Lancashire Dialect available to me. Have a great day, Victoria

Love your site. I'm writing a novel about one of my ancestors, Sir William Bradshaw, yes the one that's buried in the local church there. Your site has been very helpful. I live in the Ozarks, where we also have a very distinctive dialect. Yankees call it a "hillbilly" accent but those of us with college degrees prefer to call it "mountain william." Many people (including both sides of my family) settled here after emigrating from northern England, by way of Virginia, Tennessee, Illinois, and on to Missouri. If you'd be interested in seeing some examples of our dialect, let me know! Keep up the good work!

This is a great site. I feel that I got to know my grandfather a bit more - thank you. My grandfather was born in Gorton, Ardwick, Chorlton, but his grandfather was born in Wigan. I am presently doing my genealogy and would love to get to know the sound of the Lancashire accent. My grandmother, who was from Maidstone,Kent, got a snicker on occasion when my grandpa was on the phone and she could tell that the person at the other end of the line couldn't understand a word he was saying. My mother said the same thing when she first started going with my dad. My grandfather died when I was 1 year old, so I never got to know him or his accent, but my mom said he was an extremely nice person.

I was born in Wallgate and then moved, in 1937 to "the new" council estate at Beech Hill. I went to Beech Hill Primary and the Girls High School. After leaving school I went to work at the Central Library. I am proud of my Lancastrian roots (notice not Gtr. Manchester)I like to visit as often as possible - I have been researching my family history for about 10 years. the main family names are Dawson, Beesley, Forshaw and Liptrot.

A reet gradely site Jeff. The poetry is very funny but behind it is a wealth of experience of what life was really like. Posh Visitors and Pickin Coal are now inscribed on the cannel coal lump I use for throwing at southerners on the telly. By the way, when did Wigan move out of Lancashire? Greater b***dy Manchester my a**e! I get to Wigan about a couple of times a year and each time now I get more lost. Bring back the red and white buses and hang a few councillors off lamp posts up Scholes.

I'm an American, but was the pastor of the Church of Christ in Victoria Road, Platt Bridge, during the 1980s. My wife and I have fond memories of our friends in and around Wigan, and both our daughters were born there. We hope to visit again soon. Thank you for this site. (I can't speak "Wigan" very well at all, but I do remember "translating" a conversation for a friend of ours who was visiting from her home in Kent.)

Thank you for this site. I speak and use "oh-so-standard- English" now but I feel strongly about the need to preserve the colour and "real" quality of the Lancashire dialect. Somewhere I have a poem called "T'pigeon fancier"written by a relative of mine and given to me by my late Grandfather... I will just have to go and find it now....

My mum's family were all from Wigan, and her father lived in Platt Bridge - Liverpool Road/Syresham Street - Jack Meadows (My Grandad) and Edna Meadows (daughter, my mum), now both sadly passed on. Reading the poems certainly reminded me how this side of my family would talk between Jack and Bessie (my grandma) and fellow 'Wigonians' !

What a Lovely Site. I Really liked the photos, especially the ones of your family. My own family come from the Platt Bridge and Ince area on my mothers side, their name was Jervis. My fathers side came from Stubshaw Cross, their name was Winrow. My Auntie, Annie Jones worked on the Pit Brow before she married my Uncle, Bert Dowding a local butcher in Platt Bridge, you might remember the shop. most of the men in my family worked in the local mines, My father Thomas Winrow was working at the Maypole possibly when you say your own father was there. Its a small world don't you think.
Thank you once more for the site, it's great. I will visit again now I know about it. Keep on writing, when I read the dialect verse it brings back memories of my grandma, she used to read dialect poems to us from the local paper.

Great site, a bit of nostalgia for me to read the old lingo, written in true form (I have lived in the Netherlands for 28 years). I come from a mining family and I was familiar with the old dialect which my dad and uncles spoke. When my Dutch husband was in their company the first time (he thought he could understand English at the time) he said "they could have sold me on the spot because I couldn't understand a word they were saying". My dad's name was Harry Johnson and was born in Whelley, he worked at Bold Colliery in St. Helens. Would like to hear from anyone who knew him.

I was born in Manchester in 1943 and lived in Platt Bridge from 1949-1955. My dad used to own the local barbershop--Eddie Phillips. I went to St.Nathaniels church school. We later immigrated to Australia and finally the U.S.

I appreciated the old dialect. It brought back the old times when the whole area was based on a mining culture. Went back in the 70's and later the 90's..totally changed.
I have another dialect phrase for you. "A six leet arkenin-in set" (a six valve wireless set)

I'll be visiting England and staying in Lancashire in 2 months time (June 2002). Your website has given me a head start in learning how to talk proper while I'm there, - a bit hard for an Aussie but I'll do me best.

hi jeff, good stuff but not how i like to write. i could never figure out how you spell, say, brown, the way we say it. would it be brane or brain? i dont know. so i stick to plain english, except when with those i live among, those i was born with, those i have conflict with, in other words, when i am speaking to folk at home. then i am as broad as any.gary.
