Do Animals have a Soul?
Jeff Unsworth
It's generally believed that animals lack cognitive capacity in the same way as humans. An animal is limited in the ability to process information and perform cognitive tasks.
An animal can have no religious concepts, so they likely don't possess a concept of a creator or a belief in a higher power.
Animals, while intelligent, do not demonstrate the ability to engage in abstract thought or philosophical reasoning, which are necessary for understanding concepts like creation or a creator.
There's no documented evidence of animals exhibiting behaviours that could be interpreted as worship, prayer, or belief in God.
Whilst the Bible doesn't explicitly state that animals don't have souls, the common interpretation is that they do not have the same kind of soul as humans, and that they do not have an afterlife or eternal destiny. The biblical view is that while animals have a spirit or breath of life (ruach), this is different from the human soul (nephesh) which is associated with consciousness and awareness of God.
Animals' primary focus is on survival, reproduction, and their immediate environment. Their actions are driven solely by instinct and basic needs.
While some animals, like apes and dolphins, have demonstrated self-awareness through the mirror test, this doesn't necessarily translate to an understanding of abstract concepts.
Religion and belief in a creator are largely considered to be human-specific phenomena, rooted in our capacity for abstract thought.
However,
A donkey saw "the angel of the Lord" when Balaam couldn't.
I believe when Scripture talks about ""the angel of the LORD"" it's referring to Pre-Incarnate Jesus.
Then, this could have been an exceptional circumstance.
Whilst animals have the breath of life, they do not have a soul. God breathed into the nostrils of man and he became a living soul.
Animals are flesh and blood and bone.
All men are sinners because of Adam and are dead in sin. “The soul that sins, it shall die, spiritually”. When a man becomes born again, his soul is made alive unto God.
When the body dies, it ceases to exist. The soul continues to exist after death.
God gave both men and animals life, they all breathe the name of the Creator, “YahWeh”.
Intake and outake of breath. So maybe this is God's way of receiving glory from all his creatures???
